Lest you need more reason to check out the myriad hotties competing to wear the crown of Lavalife Top Single 2010, consider this: $1,000 in cold hard cash is up for grabs.

And to think some people suggest the Top Singles judges - including yours truly – have it easy. Pshaw, I say. You can buy a lot of potato chips with one thousand dollars (insert pinkie, Dr Evil-like, in corner of mouth).
Anyhoo, the countdown is on; we are now just a month away from the final competition which this year is folded into our inaugural Summer Lovin’ weekend promotion which aims to pack as much fun as humanly possible into three days in Toronto.
Tickets range in price from $20 to $40 (with savings offered to Lavalife members) and include such events as the Launch Party at the C Lounge July 15, Fun in the Sun at Polson Pier July 16, Love and Lust through Art at Art Gallery of Ontario July 17, and of course the Summer Lovin’ Grand Finale with recording artist Jason Derulo July 17 at the Mod Club.
I plan to attend all the events (hey, it’s not like I’ll have $1,000 in my back pocket to purchase cocktails with) but any one of them looks like a great place to fraternize with like-minded singles and other cool folks. I’m sure I’ll stand out like a butt-ugly sore thumb fit right in.

The curtain of secrecy has been drawn back and it’s official: from literally thousands of entries, a short list of 30 Top Singles is now firm. Let the proverbial games begin.
Reviewing the entries again today, everyone’s inclusion seems obvious. But I can tell you as one of the judges tasked with pushing some singles forward while culling others from the race, the decision was tougher than you can imagine.
For one thing, trying to detect personality within a two-dimensional medium is, like, waaay hard. Sure, some profiles really sing and dance. But as anyone who has ever tried to create such a thing can attest, it’s very hard writing about yourself without coming across like an egomaniacal maniac or some deluded loser searching for a mystical, unattainable mate (presumably sitting atop a unicorn).
Also, men and women tend to present differently… at least if you ask me they do. I find women on balance are more conversational in their profiles and also (sorry if this sounds sexist) often have a better grasp of what photos are most flattering.
Men, god bless ‘em, often seem kind of lost in this regard. For proof, consult numerous shots of dudes standing beside their cars (cute but dumb, no?) or pictured with a mate obviously cut out of an old image. Then there is the face-obscured-by-cap-and-sunglasses classic.
Then again, the Top 15 guys picked for this list are, if I may say, quel bitching. Each boasts some palpable combination of sex appeal, charm, originality, kindness, sincerity, confidence and élan – sometimes all at once. The babes aren’t bad, either.
All I know is this: as the Top Singles competition heats up en route to the Summer Lovin’ weekend blowout next month – complete with performance by Jason Derulo no less – the stakes will remain deliriously high. Look away at your peril, and be sure to check back here for more blog entries and insider dish as the days click down.
